NATURAL ENVIRONMENT

Młynary and the surrounding areas comprise beautiful landscapes. Forests cover 37% of the municipal area. Among nature reserves there is the"Fern Ravine" and "Lenki". Within the basin of the river Bauda, there is the Młynary Territory of Conservation Area and the Conservation Area of the River Bauda. What is more, there are many beaver lodges. The river Bauda, Okrzejka, The Fox Ravine and Gardyna are another attractions worth seeing.

Here are the nature reserves located within the area of the municipality:

a)      THE NATURE RESERVE OF 'LENKI'

The nature reserve of 'Lenki' was established in 1959. It is situated on the municipality's territory, near the village of Dawidy. The area of 9.74 ha (24.05 acres) was placed under the laws of conservation in order to preserve a fragment of the ancient habitat of beech and larch. The north-west part of the reserve (3 ha =7.41 acres) is covered by the European variety of larch, about 160 years old. Today, the trees are of impressive sizes, even up to 48 metres in height and 330 cm in perimeter. The remaining area of the reserve is the habitat of beech as the dominating species, and other less prominent trees. A deep ravine with steep sides, covered with leafy trees, lends a good deal of charm to the place.

b) THE FERN RAVINE - 'PIÓROPUSZNIKOWY JAR'

The reserve was established in 1962. The area of 37.78 ha (93.3 acres) was put under the laws of natural protection in order to preserve a picturesque stretch of mixed tree-type forest, with a big patch of fern Mattencia Struthiopteris.
The ravine is a deep cleft in the eroded ground of a wavy moraine. At some points, the land inclines at an angle of more than 45 degrees. The scarps of the minor streams as well as of the main one, the river Włóczyska, are particularly steep.
91 per cent of the reserve's area is covered by hundred-years-old and older trees. Beech and fir are the dominant species. The rest are horn-beam, birch, alder, ash, lime, and maple.

c)    THE MŁYNARY TERRITORY OF CONSERVATION AREA AND THE CONSERVATION AREA OF THE RIVER BAUDA – established on the 26th of April 1985 in order to preserve the erosion slits on the eastern slopes of the Elbląg Upland, the landscape characteristic of the basin and hydrotrope of the river Bauda, as well as the biotope of the forest.

d)   THE SŁOBITY TERRITORY OF CONSERVATION AREA – established on the 26th of April 1985 in order to preserve the landscape of the Warmian Plain.
